Frequently asked questions

We will provide you with the right advice

How do you choose the right lawyer?

You never think you need a lawyer until you do. Lawyers will often say that you need a strong legal team to support you but very rarely do we think about it until a particular situation arises. Notwithstanding this, we suggest that when you are looking to engage a lawyer you need to think long term about the person who will be acting for you. You have to be comfortable being honest with this person; you have to be comfortable making disclosures to this person; you have to feel that this person is someone you can trust and someone who will fight for you even if they have pointed out weaknesses in your position to you. This is crucial as your lawyer is a confidante who is ethically obliged to advance your position. If you do not feel comfortable approaching them or do not feel comfortable trusting them with some of the most important aspects of your life then your lawyer in turn will not be able to truly ensure that your best interests are met.

What to bring to your first appointment with a lawyer?

The first appointment is one where you are effectively interviewing the lawyer to see whether or not you feel comfortable with them, trust them and can be transparent with them. Once you have established that rapport then it is important that you provide your lawyer with as much information as possible in relation to the specific matter or circumstances that have resulted in you attending that meeting. It could be providing your lawyer with all of the contractual information, incorporation documents, financial documents or simply relaying the facts as best you can so that your lawyer can advise you accurately and fully in relation to not only your position but the avenues available to you moving forwards. We would strongly recommend providing documents or supporting material or any correspondence received by you relevant to your matter before your meeting so that your lawyer can ensure that they are fully across your matter when you sit down to talk about your options.

What questions should you ask a lawyer in your first meeting?

When meeting a lawyer always remember that we are here to help you. Our job is to assist you achieve the result that you seek within the bounds of the law. It is therefore important that you ask any questions that you may have to ascertain whether the lawyer is the right fit for you. Good questions to ask are in relation to prior experience and cost. Better questions to ask are in relation to creative options to achieve a result and different strategies that may be available to you that work for your individual circumstances. A lawyer’s ability to think creatively and provide more than a single approach will tell you volumes about their ability to adjust as circumstances and plans often do change during a dispute or in any negotiations.

Can you help me straight away?

Yes we can. Where a matter is urgent always make sure that your lawyer has the ability and time to set aside and focus on addressing the urgency. In our experience, ensuring availability to clients is one of the most important building blocks to a long term and productive working relationship. Your lawyer is there to assist you and therefore must be available to you especially so where urgent action is required.

How do our fees work?

As each matter and each client is unique, we approach costs with this in mind. We are transparent about our fees and billing. When we meet with you we will outline the nature of our fees for each matter. In some cases hourly billing is the most cost effective in others a fixed fee structure is most appropriate.
